Food & Restaurant
Latinos have a rich and flavorful cuisine which should not be lost just because we live in the U.S. Fortunately there are several good sources of Latino food products in the Philly area. We have also found many supermarkets are open to carrying specific products if you ask them to – talk to the store, produce or deli manager depending on what product you want. Dishes or recipes that are part of your country’s heritage are something which should be enjoyed with friends and passed down to your children. Most of the area supermarkets carry the typical Goya/Mexican line of products but several have additional products catering to Hispanics of other countries-of-origin and fresh items.
If you’re looking for crema de leche, it can be found as ‘Table Cream’ in the canned milk section of many supermarkets.
A good substitution for ‘Papa Criolla’ (a popular South American small yellow potato) is the baby yellow or gold potatoes now sold in small net bags in many produce departments.

The Fresh Grocer (multiple locations around the Philly area)
The Drexel Hill location of this supermarket carries several latino products. They have the traditional Goya line as well as the Nestle Table Cream (crema de leche). They have a good selection of fresh Latino products in their produce department including coconuts, yucca, ñame, sugar cane, packaged aloe vera juice, mara papaya (the large papaya). Their fresh deli section also carries real hispanic Queso Blanco at times (if you ask, they will carry it more often).
HMart (multiple locations in NJ and PA)
This Asian chain carries a huge selection of top quality produce items many of which apply to Latinos as well. For example, they have the large papayas and an extensive selection of different peppers (from hot to mild). They also have a good selection of herbal products in their regular grocery isles.
ShopRite, East Norriton (Norristown), PA
This supermarket has an extremely high and versatile number of latino/hispanic food products and are very willing to seek out additional product if you let them know what you’re looking for.
