Food & Restaurant
Latinos have a rich and flavorful cuisine which should not be lost just because we live in the U.S. Fortunately there are several good sources of Latino food products in the Philly area. We have also found many supermarkets are open to carrying specific products if you ask them to – talk to the store, produce or deli manager depending on what product you want. Dishes or recipes that are part of your country’s heritage are something which should be enjoyed with friends and passed down to your children. Most of the area supermarkets carry the typical Goya/Mexican line of products but several have additional products catering to Hispanics of other countries-of-origin and fresh items.
If you’re looking for crema de leche, it can be found as ‘Table Cream’ in the canned milk section of many supermarkets.
A good substitution for ‘Papa Criolla’ (a popular South American small yellow potato) is the baby yellow or gold potatoes now sold in small net bags in many produce departments.

There are many good latino-owned/operated restaurants in the Philly are. Some of our more local, down-to-earth favorites are:
Mission Burrito, Lansdowne, PA: This small but comfortable space in the Blockbuster Plaza in Lansdowne packs a host of surprises you wouldn’t expect from the title. The owner/chef is Mexican in origin and does a wonderful job of providing high quality, fresh, California-style Mexican food. Some favorite aspects include the fresh salsa bar which hosts a variety of around six different fresh, homemade salsas and the fact that you can get glass-jarred Jarritos in a variety of flavors. This is a great place for some fresh, flavorful CA/Mex food.
