BÁMBULA is an intergenerational, predominantly female, Afro-Puerto Rican musical group based in the city of New York dedicated to the preservation of Puerto Rico’s oldest living African musical and cultural tradition. Founded in 2006 under the musical direction of Norka H. Nadal, affectionally called “La Flaka”. The group members are a mix of educators, activists, professionals and full time musicians dedicated to the empowering of Puerto Rico’s musical legacy, Bomba. BÁMBULA performs Bomba from the Western part of the island, specifically the town of Mayagüez where it is said that all of Puerto Rico’s Bomba originates. The group also pays homage to the traditions of Santurce and other Puerto Rican towns where Bomba is played. Bambula contains originally composed songs as well as songs that have been handed down by prior generations within the Nadal family.
