Sandungeo Non Stop – Keeping you in the loop 3.5.10
We assume you’ve all heard by now that the latest earthquake action in Chile has not only possibly manipulated the Earth’s axis spin (changing it by 3 inches), but as a result our days would be shorter by 1.26 millionth of a second, a small bit of info that was ‘math-ed’ out by some geophysicists. Therefore we travel through ‘time’ faster than ever before. We are in the age of the Jetsons more than ever! We’ve got it all from floating vehicles to robotic maintenance and homekeeping to walking dogs on treadmills (thank you Cesar Milan, órale!), we have made the leap into the future. And in doing so, we must leave some things behind.
Yes, a daunting task, but it must be done. So much to choose! Guns? Pollution? Freak waves? Famine? Racism? Kiddie pageantry? Some reality shows? That “We are the World” remake…English & Spanish versions (shame on you music industry, you know what you did!)
…we could throw it all in one big Stargate and have it shipped off somewhere else…
But we digress. Wow, almost went there! whew!!… Back to the future. We’re going in!

3.5.10 Friday/viernes: ENCANTAMIENTOS/ENCHANTMENTS!
Guest curator Anabelle Rodriguez-Gonzalez brings together the work of Henry Bermudez and Rodriguez Calero, who are both well versed in creating magical illusions and nuances that take us beyond our world. Bermudez’s work translates into a sinuous style full of evocative and mythical cadence. With systematic craft, surfaces become a kind of pierced lace and result in a labyrinth that pulls us into his world of archetypal forms and anthropomorphic mythological beasts. Rodriguez Calero’s collages are highly lyrical yet imbued with a tension and intent found in zen poetry. A style of painting she calls acrollage, Rodriguez Calero builds layered images that strike a form of visual balance between spirituality and urbanity. Like light and shadow, the work of these two artists emits a brightness and darkness, whose visions are irresistibly enchanting with their sheer yet subtle power.

3.5.10 Friday/viernes: THE AFRO-DOMINICAN JAZZ PROJECT!
Comprised of The Paul Austerlitz Quintet and guest drummer/dancer/singer José Duluc, accompanied by other musicians, The Afro-Dominican Project will present a musical journey within the world of Afro-Dominican rhythms such as Palo and Merengue, seamlessly infused with traditional & free form jazz. Ethnomusicologist Dr. Paul Austerlitz is a seasoned jazz musician, and his extensive study of Afro-Dominican music had brought him acclaim in the literary world (‘Merengue: Dominican Music and Dominican Identity’ and ‘Jazz Consciousness’) as well as the academic world, where he teaches at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. José Duluc is best known as the famous songwriter/producer/percussionist/performer responsible for creating songs that lyricallyy celebrate his Afro-Dominican roots, like the platinum-selling “La Ciguapa” and the famous Carnaval anthem, “Carnaval para a Gozar”.
As if two heavyweights were enough, the band lineup is just as stellar: Drummer Babatunde Lea (of McCoy Tyner/Stan Getz fame), pianist Richard Johnson (currently with Wynton Marsalis), and bassist Eric Wheeler (formerly with Roy Hargrove and Jimmy Heath).
Admission is free, however you must RSVP in advance. For ticket information, contact: info@raicesculturales.org
