Hello World, As our fellow East Coasters dig themselves out of their overnight igloos (Yes, an official blizzard warning was issued!), we @ Afrotaino Productions delight in the fact that we know the remedy to cabin fever! We’ll share some tips, don’t worry. Read below! ————————————————————–
2.11.10 Thursday/jueves: ALEXANDRE ARRECHEA EXHIBIT/OPENING RECEPTION! Born in Trinidad, Cuba, Alexandre Arrechea graduated from the “Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA)” in Havana in 1994. For twelve years he was a member of the art collective Los Carpinteros, before continuing his career as a solo artist. Today, he is regarded as today’s hottest visual artist out of Cuba. The interdisciplinary quality of Alexandre Arrechea’s work reveals a profound interest in the exploration of both public and domestic spaces. This quest has led him to produce several monumental projects like “Ciudad Transportable” (2000), “The Garden of Mistrust” (2003-2005), “Perpetual Free Entrance” (2006), and (pictured) “Orange Tree” (2010). Afrotaino Productions’ DJ Rahsaan has crafted a unique soundscape for the Philly stop of this exhibit tour, expanding upon Arrechea’s visual themes with musical selections from Chano Pozo to Kruder & Dorfmeister. Join us tonight as we welcome Mr. Arrechea & his exquisite works to the City of Brotherly Love, courtesy of Magnan Metz Gallery & I.C.E. 2.12.10 Friday/viernes: JUAN SANCHEZ EXHIBIT OPENING RECEPTION! Brooklyn-based, award-winning artist Juan Sánchez brings, for the first time to Philadelphia, his new body of prints. The Unknown Boricuas + Prisoner: Abu Ghraib created for Taller Puertorriqueño’s 35th Anniversary exhibition season, The Graphic R/Evolution, and as an independent project of Philadelphia’s first international print quadrennial The Graphic Unconscious, running from January 29 – April 11, 2010. Art critic Lurie Lipman describes Sánchez as a “healer, an artist who takes elements of his culture fragmented by colonial and neocolonial powers, and works them into a restorative manner.” Sánchez is best known as a graphic artist whose work combines photography, and a mix of print techniques often incorporating text and iconographic images of the Taino, African, and Spanish catholic traditions in Puerto Rico. Sánchez’s new works are some of his deepest and most compelling images, documenting the juxtaposition between political prisoners and civil rights leaders, questioning powers of politics and religion, and bringing to light the lesser-known histories of the Puerto Rican liberalist movement. For the first time, Sánchez delivers his multilayered images completely in digital form along with selected works never before exhibited. A catalogue featuring the new series will accompany the exhibition and includes an essay by independent curator Rebeca Noriega-Costas who has worked with Museo del Barrio and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City. Juan Sánchez Art Exhibit Opening Reception: The Unknown Boricuas + Prisoner: Abu Ghraib Friday, February 12, 2010 5PM – 8PM (Exhibit runs 2.12.10 – 3.27.10) Taller Puertorriqueño Lorenzo Homar Gallery 2721 N. 5th St. Philadelphia

Please join us on Wednesday, February 10, 7:00, for a reading at the Moonstone Arts Center, 110A S. 13th Street, in Center City Philadelphia. (That’s the second-floor space above what used to be Robin’s Bookstore. Larry Robin continues to operate the upstairs as a venue for cultural activities.)
Mark Lyons will read from Espejos y Ventanas/Mirrors and Windows, a collection of oral histories of migrant Mexican farmworkers in Kennett Square, PA (New City Community Press, distributed by Syracuse University Press). The book is in Spanish and English. Mark, who has worked with the Latino immigrant community for many years, will also bring along illustrations by a well-known muralist.
