Afro-Latinas and Activism: Politics, Gender and Race

In the early 1900s, Puerto-Rican born Arturo Alfonso Shomburg set out to unearth for public record the history and accomplishments of Black Latinos, and later, of Black people throughout the world.

Taller Puertorriqueño in collaboration with Swarthmore Intercultural Center, the African American Museum in Philadelphia and Encuentro, celebrates his legacy through its Annual Arturo Schomburg Symposium, exploring the intricate influences of the African Diaspora on Latino culture and the complex issues of race within the Latino community.

Giving props to all of Latin America, bring your flags & show your support!
Vendors, community information booths, and lots of food kiosks, and various music from Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana, Cuba, NuevaYol, Filadelfia.. with some anticipated performances from a long list of performers including Los Brothers Band, Bannakumbi, Julian y Su Oro Duro, Xande Cruz, Loisaida, Impacto Vallenato, Marlon,  Conjunto Clasico, and more! Venezuelan jam band Los Amigos Invisibles return to World Cafe Live to throw down their trademark latin-funk-samba-disco-house-bossa-grooviness! Dancefloor madness will ensue, guaranteed. Praised for years by the infamous “Little” Louie Vega, the guys are back with a new album, “Commercial”, available now on Nacional Records. These guys are notorious for their on-stage antics & musical virtuosity.
