Here’s the latest news on summer events from Afrotaino Productions:
5.27.09. Wednesday/miercoles: Tune in to Univision 65/Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Delaware Valley at 6PM & 11PM EST to watch the weekly arts/culture segment TALENTOS to catch the profile segment on AFROTAINO PRODUCTIONS! (you know, US! Rahsaan & Maggie)
6.6.09. Saturday/sabado: The 2nd Annual Philadelphia Bomba Competition hosted by La Familia Rojas (Loiza/Filadelfia) is guaranteed to be an all-out blast! Who can forget some of last year’s performance highlights, like Tato Torres of Yerbabuena cantando, Abrante & Los Parranderos de Loiza as the ‘house band’, and youth and adult competitors from Florida, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Chicago, LA, NYC, as well as Philly. Registration begins @ 12 noon, outdoor festivities end 8pm, but continue into the night with the afterparty inside of Mis Viejos Restaurant, 2700 N. Mascher Street (Mascher & Lehigh Sts.) North Philadelphia, 7 minutes from Center City. Great prizes for Dance, Song, & Drum categories. Vendor space is available (but going fast). And plenty of food, family & Afro-Puerto Rican fun in the sun. En el corazon del barrio..

6.20.09. Saturday/sabado: The Annual Summer Solstice Celebration at The Kimmel Center (Broad & Spruce Sts., Philadelphia). This all night festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Known for its international appeal, the Kimmel Center always delivers a crazy, vibrant lineup of events and performances for thousands and thousands of participants from all over the world. Last year, we debuted the Afrotaino Soundsystem, a DJ/percussion project featuring Rafael ’Rafi’ Aviles (of La Familia Aviles, a up-n-coming bomba company here in Philly) on the drums and our own DJ Rahsaan seamlessly mixing Caribbean hits. This year, DJ Rahsaan teams up with Bollywood choreographer Rosalyn Reidt, for double whopper con queso of a party. Part 1 is the dance instructional, with the choreographer & assistants teaching numerous Bollywood dance styles & techniques.
