Buenas Party People…here’s what’s up for October 2008 in the Afrotaino Universe.
But first we must share a big THANK YOU to all of you who supported the 2008 Philadelphia Puerto Rican Festival and all of its events, including our fundraiser happy hours held every Friday last month, so appropriately called Viernes Sociales aka The Official Rican Happy Hour. We danced, sang, played some dominoes, bought some art, all in the name of our community. We will be posting pics of our favorite moments throughout the festival soon. Check them by visiting myspace.com/afrotainoproductions
Speaking of art, congratulations to LatinArt Gallery, which opened last Friday to a packed house. Gallery owner Gina Maria Echeverry has chosen Buenos Aires-born visual artist Mirta Toledo for the first exhibit, entitled ‘Pure Diversity: Art and Human Nature”, (Sept. 26-Oct.25, 2008). Very beautiful work, rich in colors and life! Expect to hear lots of more commotion from this gallery.

And for October, Afrotaino Productions is just relentless with our mission…we always aim to bring mention to some of the freshest music/art/multicultural happenings in the Philly metro area (or wherever we are at the time), and this month is gonna be packed with quality celebrations.
First, just a couple of weird coincidences. Like seeing legendary Boricua/Dominicana Poet from the Boogie Down Bronx, the Godmother of Nuyorican Poetry, the esteemed Sandra Maria Esteves, recite new and famous work (thanks to La Casa Latina @ Penn..Go Johnny! Again!) and hearing her down-to-earth approach and delivery in her poetry. She also spoke on her experiences as a visual artist, a mother who’s always on duty (she even took a phone call from her grandson during the Q&A), and at one point, being the only woman in a male-dominated poetry scene. Don’t get it twisted, no ‘ta llorando. She’s also the first Latina woman to have a book of poetry shelved in the Library of Congress. It was a pleasure seeing, hearing, and meeting her. Hispanic Heritage Month is kicking into high gear this Tuesday, Oct. 7th, at Macy’s Center City Philadelphia. Starting at 5:30PM, Macy’s celebrates with a special performance from Tambueno & Philareyto, two of Philadelphia’s active bomba & plena performance companies. We’re not sure an Afro-Caribbean performance of any kind has ever been performed at Macy’s…except for Tami Chynn. Definitely must attend this event!
A lot of people ask us frequently, “Yo, what’s up with the party?”, “Where’s the next gig?”, “Who are you bringing in next?”, “Where’s my money?” (hahaha not that bad, shout out to El Toro)…we have some answers to those questions. You know we’re on our grind(s), and we’re always on some next ishhh.
